Oil Cooler needed for turbo build?
#1
Collecting all the parts for a turbo build. This is my first build... so not sure what is necessary for a "milder" build (500 HP max). I have a 2013 5.3L flex fuel that I'm looking to keep daily driver worthy.
Anyway, came stock without oil cooler. Was considering adding an external oil cooler prior to turbo, since the turbo will raise temps. Think it is needed or overkill? And if so what size cooler would you use (need to have room for intercooler if front mounted)?
Would run a oil thermostat valve since I live in the frozen tundra (MN).

To give you perspective, almost no one whose truck didn't come stock with an oil cooler runs and aftermarket oil cool. Especially at 500hp.
I've never had one on my truck and been turbo'ed or supercharged or both for the last 12 years! lol

Required, no, but it certainly wont hurt anything. It will help extend oil life. I am one of the few that put one on mine after I put in an oil temp gauge in my setup and pegged it at 250+ within a few minutes of easy driving.

I put one one on, along with an Improved Racing thermostat. If a stock truck has one, why on earth wouldn't a turbocharged setup need one that has oil passing through the turbo? Does it "need" one? I dunno? Do we "need" thermal sleeve for our hoses and wires? Probably not, but it certainly can't hurt...
