Default Noob with a turbo build

I have 1500 miles on my rebuilt LQ4 and thought mud drags was a good idea till I took sand/water into the intake and oil sample came back bad. So I tore the motor down and have spent the last week planing on stroking it to a 409.

After thinking that 505 RWHP was awesome with this new stroker plan I seen a Sig of a member that is running stock 5.3 with a turbo pushing over 650 HP and kind of made me think twice of my plans.

The guy that does all my machine work has this awesome 37 Chevy truck running LSX with twin 87MM turbos and started asking him about turbo build. His buddy is selling his set up and this is what it is.

Used for $1000
78MM Turbonetics Turbo (78MM compressor /68MM Exhaust)
Wastegate - Turbonetics RG-45

I just ordered a set of -15CC Diamond pistons to run between 9.1-9.5 depending on how much I want to mill my heads.

The build as it sits now
2001 Silverado 1500 4x4
LQ4 - .031 over
Lunati Voodoo H-Beam 6.125
Diamond -15CC dish pistons
Stock crank
Ls3 heads
EPS 228/232 114+2 604/604
BTR dual spring kit
L92 intake ported
102MM TB
50# injectors
rebuilt 4l80E
3600 Stall
5.13 SF Truetrack

Again I kind of got thrown into this in the last 14 hours and plans changed so Ill be reading as much as I can and will be following this build found here on making my own pipes. https://www.performancetrucks.net/forums/projects-gallery-189/budget-built-turbo-silverado-$1600-complete-build-inside-531823/

Same situation I was in when I spun a rod bearing in my 408. Did I want to spend X amount of money to make 500hp again, or did I want to spend close to the same amount and make a **** ton more than 500hp. Good choice going with the FI. Its a lot more fun than N/A IMO and you always have more power on tap.

Yeah I agree with you, I always wanted to do a turbo but never really looked into it. The 370 I made was kind of a dog down low so when I had to pull the motor wasn't even mad. To be honest I can put new bearings and lifters in and rerun it but what fun is 380 RWHP LOL

Does anyone see a problem with the size of that turbo or brand?

What size tires are you running? You are going to need much larger injectors.

I have 33" tires now but want to go 35-37" when these are worn down hence the over gear. At least that was the plan on gear install.

What size injectors you think I should look for and any good bang for your buck brands?

Realistically how many lbs of boost is reliable and how much HP would that make?

Nice build plans. Im in the process of a turbo build also. One mistake i made is not doing enough research on the sizing of the turbo. I bought a 76/68 with a .96 AR. The compressor side has big potential but the hot side is too small. The exhaust back pressure is gonna be in the 3:1 range. No one ever talks about the hotside of the turbo. If i had the money to up grade id get a 76/87 with a 1.15 AR. That 68mm hot side will be chocked out at around 600-650 rwhp where as the 87mm will let u go up to around 900 rwhp with out the extreme back pressure.

Im talking to the guy that has this for sale and he said its custom made from turbonetics and was speced for his LQ4 that he wanted 1000 HP. From looking around it looks like this is what they gave him.

It makes a big difference what fuel you decide to go with. If you go E85, you will need a killer fuel system with huge injectors. So before you start this journey, that is a big decision that needs to be made so you aren't spinning in circles down the road.
