Default A new guy with some Trick Turbo Questions.

Hello Everyone,
I stumbled on this forum after doing some research on turbo kits. I have been reading posts for about a week now and still have a couple questions. Please forgive me if these questions have already been posted.

First off here is a little about myself: I own a 2000 Silverado 4x4 Ext Cab with a 5.3 and 3.73’s in the rear. The OD just hit 100,000 miles and the truck has always been cared for, I have been using Mobil 1 for my oil changes since about 70,000. This is my only vehicle and is a daily driver. My truck has 12 inches of lift (9 Suspension & 3 Body) on 37 inch tires and 22 inch wheels. Performance mods so far are: K&N intake, Flowmaster 3 inch exhaust, and is Superchip programmed. I did the lift and mods on my own, so I am not a complete mechanical idiot but not a genius either. For the past couple months I have been debating on selling the truck and starting a new project but have decided to install a forced induction upgrade instead. I originally was planning on purchasing a STS kit, but after doing some research have decided that the Trick HI Mount Kit suits me better. I am looking to purchase the turbo kit within 3 months, along with some upgrades like a FMIC. I plan on installing a beefed up 4L60E the same time I do the turbo. Here is my goal: I would like my truck to run a low 14 in the quarter and still be a very reliable daily driver. I understand that this is going to be a hard task since the truck weighs an assload with the lift and tires. I do not plan on doing any internal engine mods right away. So here are my questions in set form.

1st Q Set= Can I get my truck through vehicle inspection (NY State) after the Trick install? Can I run high flow cats and mufflers after the turbo? Do I need mufflers at all? Will it pass emissions?

2nd Q Set= Can my truck run low 14 quarter times and still be a reliable daily driver? How much HP is needed to achieve this time? Can this time be accomplished with 7 to 8 pounds of boost? Will I need internal engines mods (ie cam or springs) to run this time?

3rd Q Set= I do not plan on using 4 wheel drive under WOT or for launches; but if I need to use 4 wheel for snowy weather will my front differential and transfer case hold up? Will I need to upgrade to a 12 bolt rear? Should I change to a 4.11 ratio?

4th Q Set= I am planning to have 8k to 10k for these upgrades. Do you think this is enough money for the Trick Kit with the upgrades AND a beefed up 4L60E tranny? I plan on doing the labor myself. Am I being realistic thinking that a low 14 quarter time can be achieved from a reliable daily driver that is carrying extra weight? Will I be able to tow a small boat / motorcycle trailer with this setup?

Ok that’s all for now. Thanks for taking your time and reading my short novel. All comments are appreciated.

8Kwould have covered my trans and trick kit. I have a fully built trans with a stall.A lot of people on here do 4 wheel drive launches i THINK Stock???. Assuming that i think your diff and t case would hold, more strain would probly come from the weight of your tires over the power. The weight is always there, the boost (power) isnt. Im not sure of emissions. Not sure of the times either. SHould be able to run 7-8 lbs. When my truck moves again i will run 9. I have the 02 Z06 cam and ls6 springs. Which u could do as well for around 300 dollars and some time. Hey it fits the budget....

Not sure about the NY emissions testing. A sniff test any good tuner can make it pass. The truck is more efficient with a turbo. The vissual depends on the tester. Hi flow cats ? sure you can.
The muffler get a straight through perferated core design. They work better then a chamber type muffler. And you can do a cut out if you want the noise and increase in performance.

2nd Q Set= Can my truck run low 14 quarter times and still be a reliable daily driver? How much HP is needed to achieve this time? Can this time be accomplished with 7 to 8 pounds of boost? Will I need internal engines mods (ie cam or springs) to run this time?

I think very doable. the combo is close to what WJMARK was running. HP not sure dynos across the board will read different.
You can run 8psi on stock stuff as long as it is not warn out. ie the springs. I beleive in NOT changing something until you need to. You will need larger injectors, and fuel pump to be safe.

3rd Q Set= I do not plan on using 4 wheel drive under WOT or for launches; but if I need to use 4 wheel for snowy weather will my front differential and transfer case hold up? Will I need to upgrade to a 12 bolt rear? Should I change to a 4.11 ratio?
The truck will perform off idle like before with just a slightly better throttle responce. And what I mean by this, if you arein the snow and are just barely in the throttle just enough to get thing moving the truck will react pretty much the same. Now if you stab the throttle in the snow even in 4x4 you will not be going anywhere, but into tire spinville. I think all your drive line parts are fine, but the tranny. Gear ratio, leave it for now. 4.10 are more aggressive and sounds like you will be in the snow more then the track.

I think your covered depending on the tranny mod. Trick kit, 4254.00 IC kit 700.00
4954.00 plus is you get in on the special this month a wide band controller and freight would be FREE with the purchase of both.

So 4954.00
injectors 400.00
fuel pump ? 200.00
final exhaust work. 500.00
misc stuff.
wideband sensor 75.00
wide band gauge 150.00
boost gauge 150.00
new oil / filter 65.00
tune/ software 1000.00
spark plugs 20.00

I am sure i am missing something but you can see you will have some coinage left over for a pretty good tranny if you are at the 10K mark.

Thank you Rick, Trever1t, and Charcold-bowtie for the warm welcome. Also thanks for taking the time and reading my long *** post.

Rick, I appreciate you answering all those questions. Once I work out my funds I'll be giving you a call. Your product is top notch and from what I can see from the response here your customer service is too.

I'll be lurking around the forums till then, will probably have a few more question. Thanks again guys.

Oh and Trever1t that is a bad *** rig you got there, I was watching those youtube videos from your car domain page - very awesome, nice work.

I would go ahead and upgrade to a 4L80E and 3/4 ton transfer case if you are going to spend the money.

I would set aside a little over 7 g's for just the turbo and accessories. I think you would be fine with a FLT Level 5 for a trans and that puts you right around the 10 k mark. Go with the 60 lb injectors right at the start.

Also that is an awesome deal Trick is offering right now. I would say that is going to save someone about 500 dollars. I would jump on that if I were you.

I am running a high flow cat and stock exhaust.

Passed Ma inspection.

I don't know about gear ratios for you. I am running 3.42's and they are killing me. It takes a little while to spool, but when it does it sure takes off.

I did the install myself with some help from my buddies in zero temp this passed December. Was cold but we were able to get it done.

Very nice kit.

Thanks for the extra advice Dan96z71 & Thunderwagen. I think I am gonna just stick with an upgrade 4L60E with stock transfer case and front diff. I do not plan to be beating on this truck while in 4 wheel.

Good to know that I should set aside about 7k just for the turbo install. I do plan on putting in the necessary gauges, along with injectors, fuel pump and a FMIC. Gonna need a tune as well. I also plan on ditching my flowmasters for something else, so figure a couple hundred there.

I guess I'll wait and see how long the rear holds up before I do a ratio change. I just had to do the rear about 6 months ago. The 8.5 inch 10 bolt doesn't like those big tires.

And do realize that rick overprices stuff, probly on purpose for the safety of a build. I think 7K is pretty accurate for a turbo up and running. After injectors tuning gauges.
