I'd just punch it out to 3.898, 5.7L bore and run forged ls1 pistons and some gen4 rods. That's what I have in my 01 truck now and seems to be taking the beating. The machine shop should sonic check the block, but most 5.3 blocks are fine for that over bore.
Oh, and even gapping rings, you can still break ring lands like that. I did on my ly6 with gaps set at .025. Pretty sure that's a detonation issues from too much timing.

I just called my local machine shop. Adams Metalizing. And got a quote for $400 if a hone will take care of the scrapes in the bore keep the 5.3 size pistons. $600 to bore out to 3.9xx. But I don’t think they have the ability to sonic check the block and they said they “may” have done a 5.3 to 5.7 before. I don’t really want to take unnecessary chances with the machine work. Is this typical of machine shops or should I find a more high volume LS shop?

Any recommendations for shops in Southern California? Also. I’m concerned about throwing 3k+ into this bottom end when I can go to Texas speed or Thompson Motorsports. And pick up a 6.0 long block for 4300 ish. Do you think I would end up with a more quality and reliable product going that route?
