Default IAT Question

For you turbo guys, how quickly does your IAT rise when you get into boost? I was expecting my IAT's to climb quickly when in boost, but they actually stay fairly steady. My IAT sensor is where the EGR port was on the side of the intake and it sticks into the flow a good amount. My cruising IAT's are 10-20F higher than ambient. During a few seconds of boost, the IAT's won't rise much at all, but about 30 seconds later the IAT's will be a couple degrees higher, and then they will drop back down.

At the moment I'm only running 4-5psi, and haven't been in boost for more than a few seconds (still working out the bugs). It's a KB kit with a Turbonetics TC76 and a low mount intercooler. Perhaps I need more boost and more time in boost for higher IAT's? Just want to make sure my IAT sensor is being truthful.

Ok that's what I thought. I was installing the water/meth injection kit yesterday and was thinking why am I doing this if my IAT's aren't going up...

For the Octane

Mine usually stay ~5* over ambient cruising. If i turn my water pump off they go up about 40* or so cruising. especially with the AC blasting, IC is right between the Efans and engine water pump pulley.

but if i set my WM kit up to start spraying at 2psi boost, the IATs stay where they are even if im seeing 5-6psi pulling a long hill with a heavy load.

Have you idled for a lil while yet? I got stuck in the drive thru at lunch time and my IATs creep up to 150-160ish after about 30 minutes with the AC wide open. Get back on the highway and it goes down to ~10*above ambient.

Haven't idled for awhile yet, no traffic around here and the outside temps are pretty mild, 60-80F. Is 10-20F above ambient normal when cruising with an air-to-air IC? My guess is the cold pipes are getting warmed up from the heat in the engine bay, and the compressor housing gets pretty hot, almost too hot to touch.

Do you have a pic where your IC is mounted? Make sure it has a good air flow?

IC pipes close or touching Coolant hoses?

IC is directly behind the bumper and lower valance, so basically it has no direct airflow from the front. KB said it should still work okay. Might need to open up the valance for more flow however. No coolant lines are touching the pipes.

One of the guys used a Z71 tahoe/sub valance and cut the slots out in the middle for some air flow.

I bet doin something like that will drop your cruising IATs

I thought about that too, and have been looking at some aftermarket valances, or an SS bumper cover.

Also, I have one pipe that comes up from the bottom, behind the fans, and 90's into the TB. This pipe gets pretty warm since it's right behind the fans/radiator. I might need to wrap it with some insulation. The rest of the pipes stay cool.

Or some type of block to keep the heat off it. i thought about wrapping mine and putting a heat sheild on my IC since all the heat from the AC condensor and Radiator are blasting it.
