Default Home Brew STS

OK, I know someone has tried this. My plan is to try it on my 2000 5.3l Pickup and if it works, maybe, I said maybe, on my 2000 SS. I really dont like where the intake pipe goes under the a-arm on the camaros. I live where body kits rarely survive. For the kit I plan on using a:
T04E 60 trim .60a/r comp, .81a/r turb. ball brng $225-$1300
mocal 50 psi electric oil pump $180
1/4 oil line, the high pressure stuff $1.50 foot
1/4 Brass fittings $10-$15
38mm wastegate $90-$250
2.5" tubing stainless or not $40-$100
3" tubing $20-$30 dont need much
t3 t4 weld on flange $14.80
wastegate flanges 2 for $15-$30
2.5" silicone couplers 10 $2.81 ea. cut your self from 24" peice
3"-3.5" coupler $16.99 for MAF
2.5"-3.5" coupler $16.99 for MAF
3" 90 ? for Throttle body not sure of size, trucks in body shop.$20-$25
2.5" T clamps $3.20 ea. 10 or more
3.5" t clamps 2 $9.98
exhaust hangers $5
K&N $50
Will also need some wiring for the oil pump
1.5" tubing for the wastegete
some flex pipe to get the K&N up out of the way of water
gaskets for the turbo
maybe a v-band if your turbo doesnt come with one
Im sure I probably forgot something, but tell me what you guy think.
this wont be for the faint hearted, it will take some serious fabrication to make it all fit.
No disrespect to STS but $4k is 2 months wages, ouch.
My way I can build it as I can afford it.
Well, let me have it

I dont. There is no rocket science involved in fabbing up your own STS style kit. If you have access to the proper tools, I say go for it. You can save yourself a couple thousand bucks. Also, while you are at it, you might as well throw a FMIC in the mix...Not much more time or money and will be well worth it for the day after you run the 6lbs and are ready to switch to the 10lbs Stay tuned for pics of my home brew kit progress

I say go for it. I was going to do the same thing till I stumbled across a slightly used kit for about $500 more then I thought I could build it for. I figured my time was worth that, so I bought the kit. If you have any question, feel free to ask me. I did add my own custom intercooler and fixing to add my own meth too.

Its no doubt that it can be done. STS did it, right??? Building the kit is the easy part, it sounds like a bunch of work and looks like a bunch, but its actually not. Just get with a good tuner and let the fun begin. It can also be done with the HEMI now that there is a good way of doing a tune. I've been into turbos with my cars a long time, and I get enough of turbos playing with them, so I have decided to give it a rest as far as an idea on my truck. meching up the kit is the easy part, just get with a person that can set up management on it.

Do you have a welder? If so I dont see why you couldnt, as long as you are willing to put the time in. I was going to build my own, but found one used at a great price. Time is at more of a premium for me than money though. I also want to have the truck down for the least amount of time possible. Im doing the turbo and motor install and then taking it right to the shop to have the tranny done. I would do that, but Im not all that comfortable with trans stuff. I prefer to do my own installs if I can so that I know it is done right.
I would buy the turbo last and keep your eyes open for a nice one used on here or LS1tech though. You are going to want something bigger than a 60-1.
Take pics!

I do have a welder and have been fabricating since I was in high school, so that parts not tough. I have lots of aluminum 3" flex ,like dryer vent. It will work good as a pipe template. But Im still gathering parts.
Thanks

MNC5 is in a position to know what's involved with fabbing up your own rear-mount from scratch and, IMO, you should pay attention to what he has to say on the matter.

I hear ya MrXerox. but the problem is that I can weld, wire, paint, do a little body work ect.. But I'm not good enough at it to satisfy my own tastes. And if a guy was proficient enough at welding and fabricating he probably wouldn't have asked which way was better.

But if someone doesn't value there time or the experience that STS has put into there kits I'd say go for it. Spend an hour tracking down a 5 dollar clamp... is it still 5 bucks? or is it hourly cost plus gas, plus 5 bucks... Then when you get it all done will it blow smoke like a Disco Fog machine? Mine did... So unless your making a serious attempt to make big power I'd recommend going with the STS kit. I'd say by the time you’re done you won’t spend that much more getting the STS kit. If your into cars you know that we under estimate how long things will take by a factor of 10... Bending up the intake pipe from the turbo to the intake and having it mounted properly, no rubbing, coatings, buzzers, check valves...ect.. ect..

kbracing96 took a good route. 44newman, if you can fab go for it. But get ready to spend some real time under the truck.
