Default Help me turbo my Excursion

Hey guys

Been reading for a couple of weeks.

I want to turbo my V10 excursion for towing. The truck will accept a powerstroke intercooler easily. What turbo should I use for a 6.8 liter engine ? I have been searching and cant decide.

I don't want to drag race!! I just want good torque for towing in the 2-3000rpm range. Also I can fabricate my own exhaust and intake plumbing.

Will i have to have tuning done as well?

Billy

If I were to guess, you would be in the range of a 76mm or similar. I would look for a big wastegate also so that you will be sure you can hold a low boost setting, maybe 5-7psi?

You will want to have it tuned with towing in mind. I think you would make 600ft lbs at 3000 rpm with that 6.8L!

thanks

500-600 at the rear would be ideal.

With the 4.30 gears I have, I turn 2400rpms at 70mph. Having that much torque on tap in that rpm range should be impressive. I am just trying to put together a plan.

Who tunes for Ford forced induction gas engines? I know there are a ton of diesel tuners. I don't want to get bigger injectors, methane, etc. I just want reliable repeatable power.

Would a 76mm wheel be like a T76 Garret? Or a GT4088? I am still trying to figure this whole turbo nomenclature thing out.

I would think with the larger disp. I would need a T4 exhaust, right?

The superchargers are around $4000. I can get a nice turbo for around 1000, an intercooler for 200, a wastegate for 200 and all the tubing for around 200. So 1600 bucks vs 4000 seems to make the most sense to me. (I'M CHEAP)

I could get the STS universal, but at 3000, I still have to rig all the plumbing.

Don't forget $400 or so for a tune, but you would likely need that with the S/C as well.

Haven't considered trading for a Diesel Excursion have you. If you are cheap, then the better mileage you can get on Diesel may be attractive to you. And a chip on those things can make some sick torque.

Just a thought. Kudos for being able to do your own work.

Oh I know what kind of torque a diesel can make. I still have a 7.3 F250 that puts down 605 torque at the rear wheels. I am selling it for a family friendly SUV. I really like the smoothness of the v10, but I really miss the awesome power of the diesel. I figure with the right combo of turbo/tune, I could match the power of my diesel(for towing).

With diesel being .40 cents more gallon, it just doesn't add up to have a diesel unless you tow all the time.

Thanks for all the input.

You can get the 500-600 at the wheels no problem, but you will need larger fuel injectors and possibly a larger fuel pump. You would also benefit from a reverse split cam.

76mm is the inducer size of the compressor wheel on the turbo. You will have a T4 exhaust on your turbo. Ball bearings are good too if the cost is not prohibitive.

I would not expect great fuel economy out of the truck when it is in boost. With towing in mind, you won't want to get much leaner than 11.5:1 AFR in boost. What type of tuning is availble for Fords? Can you tune it yourself?

What would happen if I didn't tune it at all?

It has a MAF sensor that I plan on setting up as a draw through.

Would I see much boost while towing on flat ground? It tows ok now as it is. I really dont want to see 4mpg. 8 is bad enough!!

I know the GM's do ok with no tune with 5-6lbs boost. That is going to be a grey area that people are going to stray away from recommending. As long as you don't max out the flow on the MAF sensor or your injectors you should be "ok" without a tune, but I wouldn't do it without at least some logging software to see where your peramiters are/
