Exclamation Head bolts, or head studs?

I want to replace my head bolts(stock) with new ARP stuff. I think I'm gonna push this little 5.3 a little harder.

Are ARP head studs really that much better than ARP head bolts? And if so, why?

Thanks guys.

Studs will net a more "true" tq reading due to only rotating the nut instead of the whole fasteners with the friction of the threads in the block. I don't think they're worth the extra money over the bolts bit last time o checked the bolts are on national backorder. Might get lucky and find some on tech. The bolts for an ls1 will work in your engine if its the original.

Lets hope you don't push it past 11.50 or you will have trouble getting back on the track LOL

Yes, it's the original 2001 5.3 longblock.

How many guys are just replacing one bolt at a time, without replacing the head gasket? Has that been working out okay? Then again, I've got over 150,000 miles on these head gaskets. Probably better off replacing them anyways.

Any gasket recommendations?

I'll "detune" it for the track.

As far as gaskets go, run the LS9's. The bolts are a good bit cheaper, don't think you'll need studs unless you really start pushing it.

Yank it out and put the flat tops in it with some 243s and roll. I don't see why replacing one at a time would cause any problems but I've never done it nor read of someone doing it on here.

LS9 gaskets on the smaller bore 5.3? To me, that doesn't seem optimum, and wouldn't I even be giving up some CR? Have others been doing this? Thanks for your input, I'm trying to figure out what I'm gonna do.

What is "really start pushing it" in your mind? At what point does that "line" show up that we cross?

That's what Matt's been doing since last year with his L.
