i ended up with a 4.8 cause it was the cheapest one i found.
for a budget junker, i dont think it matters too much. if i wanted to set the world on fire, i would want more displacement, but nobody here will argue that a 4.8 cant hold its own with a turbo.

check out the sloppy mechanics. if you want to play the super cheap game, a good 4.8 with ~120-150k on it (usually this puts the ring gaps in the sweet spot for boost), pac 1218 valve springs, a cam similar to a triple 12, and big injectors and pump will do it. when i did mine i threw a few bucks at rocker trunions, new timing chain, hard pushrods, and dual valve springs just to be safe.

This is the setup i'm currently putting together to throw around 18-20 psi at my 2004 RCSB 210k mile 4.8. I have everything but gears & gaskets/misc parts.
KB pipes w/ BW s475.
Custom cam. BTR springs & pushrods.
LS7 Lifters.
60 lb injectors. I'm using 93 oct. no E85.
Alky Meth Kit.
Fuel rails and regulator.
Walbro 450.
FTI 3600 stall
Built 4l80e shortened driveshaft.
4.30 gears.
Tru-trac.
Moser diff cover.
2.5 Map sensor.
