In aviation engines they have been using axial/centrifugal combinations for turbine engines since the 50's. Nothing new here, just another application of old technology to the auto industry. Heck, P&W and even Wright engines were pushing 60in/hg of boost with their superchargers in the 1930's. I worked with the old radials and the technology was astounding for the age.
