Default Converter lock up

Anyone out there lock up at WOT at the strip? I'm trying to zero in on a converter and I just can't decide if I think this is something I should consider or not.

Since I run the Maggie TVS I thought avoiding the higher RPM and creating a more 'efficient' tranny by locking up would be a big benefit to me... But I have had some people tell me otherwise.

If anyone could toss in their .02... Especially those who are running roots type blowers that would be awesome.

On a side note it seems that most with roots blowers run the triple disc converters even if they don't lock up. From what I understand about converters this seems like it would just add weight and possibly hurt all out performance (even if it is by very little) for not much benefit... Actually ive heard daily driving a multi disc 4l80e can be fairly unpleasant due to how hard it locks too.

While not a good pass, take a listen. See if you can count the rpm drops. I was in 3rd when I crossed the traps.

It was worth a little bit of mph on my combo, but it was procharger.

I wouldn't do it without a triple disk and a built trans.

Yea I wouldn't do it without the triple disc either... its why I am trying to decide what converter to get now. I would think WOT lock up is more beneficial to a maggie than it is to the procharger as well...

How strong of an 80e do you need to pull this off?

My truck is also a lot heavier than yours it... can they really handle lock up on a 5500# truck? Also, if you smoke the clutch in a single disc, how much of that abuse can a triple disc really take? Are we talking like 10-15 WOT lock ups no problem, or hundreds? After all, this is my DD and I need to be conscious of longevity with what I buy as well as how I treat it while I'm playing.

Thanks for the reply

I would still do the triple disk. With a PD blower it's really easy to have it locked on the highway and get in the gas hard enough to get a lot of boost with the converter locked up. That's how a smoked the single disk Edge converter I had and I never locked it at the track, just on the high way.

I wouldn't suggest locking it at WO at higher power levels and the stock 80e input shaft. I have locked mine at WO but not at the track as I only have 2 passes on the 80e. I have a PI 2800 10.5" triple disk.

I also would not do it without a triple disk and built trans like blown said.

Mines locks at WOT. Stock 6L80E with a 2800 stall triple disc.

What brand triple disc are you running?

I'm surprised how little the RPM drops when it locks... I expected it would drop more.

It's a Coan. It was built for an 800rwhp boosted application. It's a very tight 2800 stall. Drivabilty wise most people wouldn't even realize there's a converter in it until it locks in 3rd at cruise. It works good though, I get consistant 1.62 60ft times.

X2 and have had this same converter for 3 yrs now and love it , drives /plays/ races excellent . Lockup feels like another gear .

The only problem with PI is you MUST deal with Terry if you want to make sure your getting what you want .
