Converter choices, lifted/supercharged
#1
Most of you guys seen my thread, but if not its an 03 2500hd, 4l80e, 513 gears and 37 inch toyos. Camotion cam, maggie 1900, 2.7 pulley, 90mm ls2, stainless works headers..etc. I need to do a converter, the engine and trans has 140k on em. The trans shifts really nice and the fluids real clean, i have a transgo kit in it with a deep pml pan. For the cam i have i need the converter to be 24-2600 at most. I don't race it at the track but i do tow a trailer once in awhile. Do i really need a triple disc..?
I did see and call a few big name trans shops, its mixed feelings on what converter to choose.. The big big names push the 1k plus converters, the rest say the fancy converter isn't needed. I don't want to skimp but also if its not needed then do what is.

If you want to keep it locked you'll want a fancy one but if you are ok unlocking it a normal single disc is fine. I prefer to tune them so they unlock a bit easier. Install a huge trans cooler either way.

When it is unlocked it builds more heat, but with the big cooler unless you are towing 10,000lbs uphill for 20 minutes at a time with it unlocked you will be fine. Locked triple disc would be better for heat.

You would never be able to tell a difference unless you wanted to lock it at WOT (which I dont recommend), or tow with it locked (Which I also dont recommend unless you do extended uphill pulls, like mountains).

So honestly which one would go with what I need..?...I appreciate the help. I tow about 8k a few times a year, it's mountainous here but nothing crazy. I daily drive it to work 10 miles a day.
So a 4l80 single disc with a 2500 stahl would work but would I notice a difference with a new converter over stock..?

I think you will be fine with the single disc, just make sure your tuner sets it up to unlock over 40% throttle or so. If you need help with tuning I do remote tuning through my vendor account (Atomic Performance) through hptuners.
It comes down to how much you want to spend though. If the cost difference is like $100 I would go ahead and do the triple, but if its a $600 upgrade I would stick with the single.

The problem with this subject is its a 50-50 depending on who you talk to. I see the heavy truck idea with a triple disc, I'm not sure what to do...That's the thing, spending over 1k for a converter that i won't notice the differance wouldn't be worth it i guess. Driveability is the key since its my daily driver. I need it to do its job tho when someone messes with me tho..
