Lets talk about a Hypothetic situation...
Lets say a friend is trying to convince to move near him 30 minutes out side of Raleigh, North Carolina. But, they have vehicle inspections there and since I have a front mount turbo I don’t have cats (Hypothectic of course)…
1) Does anyone here live in NC and can you give me some details on the inspections. Do they only do exhaust emissions or is it as detailed as California where they look under the hood for toys too and knock ya for something as simple as an under hood decal that says “I’m Fast!” LoL… ???
2) I have a section of 3-inch mid-pipe on my exhaust that bolts in between my down pipe and the muffler for easy maintenance, what if I got a Bolt in Cat to go in place of that pipe section. I figure it needs to be removable because it will probably cause my EGT’s to go up and cause way too much back pressure… Diagram attached below
What about Tuning as well? I figure even if I have to detune it for the day of the inspection that’s fine too, I need a reason to buy HPTuners anyway. LoL
One guy I talked to said to just leave my truck registered and insured in Florida but, that seems like it would be more of a headache then its worth…
Of course this is all just hypothetic talk just for the fun of it, because I would never do anything illegal…. ;-)

Here we have what's called "emissions". I guess it's equivalent to most state's inspections, but if your vehicle is OBDII, all they do is plug in under your dash to check for codes and readiness tests. Then they check to see if your gas cap seals
and they shine some mirrors under your car to see if it has cats.
However, non OBDII vehicles have to go up on rollers and they get probed. I guess they figure that if its OBDII equiped, then it's smart enough to throw a code if it's polluting.
CA is the only state in the union that does what they do to that extent. I would just make sure you have a hollow cat on there with the proper 02 sensors at least to pass the visual. You can always call them and they'll probably go over the procedure with you.

From: colorado above 6000 ft.
I live in colorado and have emissions here too. They plug in your car put it on rollers. They don't lift your hood, I guess now even if your check engine light is on they can't fail you for that anymore. I havent had my truck there since the blower but should't be a problem if you have some cats to throw on. My wifes TRD supercharged 4-runner always passes. I had a talon way back when with hollowed out cats that still passed the smog test!! You can always put that guarenteed to pass **** in your gas .

I went through a smog with my Lightning and pulley/custom tune. No problems at all, and that was in California.

I live in North Carolina and basicly all they do is plug into your diagnostic port and have you idle with a probe in the tail pipe. I dont think they even raised my hood. The particular place I went to never even had me get out of the Truck. I have a magnacharger with a PCMforless tune and had no problems at all.
