Default Boost for a stocker

How much boost (STS turbo'd) would be safe for a stock tune truck, 93 octane, NR6 plugs and octane boost?
Just need a safe number until the money rolls around for some FMU stuff..

Cool

5 psi is the recommended boost for the base kit with stock tune and a custom tune is recommended. Any more than that and you should consider ungrading to a custom tune, 44# injectors, in-line or in tank 255lph fuel pump, boost and fuel pressure guages, logging software and methanol injection or an IC. You can get away without the guages and logging software if you have a tuner set it up for you and don't play with it after. I think high boost and detonation can do a lot of damage to an engine in a hurry so it is best to play it safe.

I agree, which is why Im running the 93 octane with octane booster and a colder plug.. I've been monitoring everything on Autotap. I know im losing alot of HP to knock retard. The next thing before the tune will probably be water/meth.

Meth will help a lot because you can add more fuel independent of the tune and it will also lower your intake temps.

Dang, this gas stuff is hard biz.. Im used to my diesel where i can throw as much fuel and boost as I want at it and not have to worry about detonation or anything..
BTW, this is on my girlfriend's truck. Figured I would give STS a try.. Slapped the kit on in about 7 hours, directions sucked *****. But man this thing screams and turns some heads- I had a guy try to tell me I needed new belts to help the squeeling..

I would do the tune, injectors and fuel pump next. You need more fuel first of all even at the 5 psi boost level. Then you can follow that with cooling, boost control and guages. Get the tune done next at least.

A lot of STS base kits seem to put out more than the advertised 5 psi so I would be careful untill you get a guage on there and find out how much boost you are really seeing. I would even get a handheld guage on it to see how much boost you are really seeing because it sounds like you are getting more than 5 psi to me. My base kit gave me 7 to 9.5 psi at wot with a spike to 10.5 on the shift. I was seeing IATs of 160+ at the end of a 1/4 run and my O2s were reading .880 and leaning out to .825. And this was with a tune, 44# injectors and an in-line 255lph pump.

Careful, the KR sounds to me like you are getting high IATs and very lean up top which is not good.

Well I can hear my wastegate coming off the seat at about half throttle. I put a Craftsman air pressure regulator inline with the wastegate and I set it as close to 5 psi as possible..

You'll be sorry if you run it at WOT w/o a tune. I have seen more than my share of ringlands break from a poor or no tune. GET A TUNE!!
