Holy **** that 80E converter is a freaking MONSTER! Call Dave & get a Yank ordered for that thing before you install it. Trust me on this, you will not regret it. Don't install that converter!!
LOL ya, I tried picking the converter up and it felt like it weighed 150lbs! It would be a grave mistake to use it. I looked at Yank and they want (cough, cough) $940 for a 2600 converter for this thing. I'm gonna have to do it. though.

What's your take on a shift kit? I don't really trust them all that much.

I would call Terry at Precision Ind. and get a multidisc vigilante. Then you can play and tow whatever you want.

I ve never had an issue with PI with the 4 converters ive bought from them over the years, have their multidisc race converter in my Duramax for the past 4 years and it holds up to over 1000ftlbsRWTQ/ and a heavy 7000# truck that tows 10,000 plus ! Nuff said!

Love feeling that 80e lockup!!!

Also do the Transgo Shift kit.

And BTW Nice engine build man!

Do the TransGo shift kit. I've heard mixed reviews on the PI's, (no personal experience here), but I've never been dissatisfied with the Yanks(neither have my customers), so I continue to recommend them. Dave is a good guy to deal with.

Agree with all of this. My PI Vig triple disc is a 2600 stall. I tow my boat and my GTO around with it (from FL to OK a few times) never a problem. I also have the TransGo HD shift kit. Once you get it dialed in with the tune you will love the 1-2 tire chirp at WOT and the way the converter locks up feels like it's shifting into 5th gear
You will however hate the first gear ratio after running the 60E for so long. That 80E first gear takes some getting used to. You will be saying "OMFG Shift to second already!" lol

Do you have the 9.5" or 10.5"?

Decisions, decisions. I know they're both good converters. Maybe I'll flip a coin.

Does the higher stall help with the lower first gear gear ratio on the 80e? I'm hoping it will make up the difference with regards to launching in 1st.

I talked to the PI guys and they do not recommend anything smaller than their 13" converter if you are planning to tow with it. In fact, they recommend a nearly stock stall rpm. It would however have all of their beefed up parts. Doesn't sound like too much fun to me. Oh yeah, they want $1200 plus $300 core.

I have the 10.5".
I wonder why they are saying 13" now? I said id be towing and the triple disk 10.5 is what they said would work for me. Maybe they didn't offer a bigger clutch back when I bought.
I don't think the stall helps the first gear much, 4.10 gears do
precision industries website only shows a 13 inch converter for allison transmissions.10.5" is the biggest converter for a 4l80e.

Guys, I changed the title of the thread. The thread had outgrown the title and I wanted to describe it a bit better. For the mods, if you'd like to throw this into the projects section, go ahead.

I don't know why they don't recommend the smaller converters at PI but the guy seemed pretty set against it.

Did you talk with Circle D? I just got off the phone with Chris actually.

I have a 9.5" that I am wanting to use (and tow light loads) if possible. He said as long as I run a nice cooler and get it stalled down to around a 2B (3000-3200) I should be able to tow 3k or so pounds. Not sure how much you are needing to tow.
