Not just crazy fast, but out of it peak effeciency range. Spinning it around 15000 rpm's if I have it figure right. Running a 3 inch pulley on it. Lysholm shows max rpms for the compressor at 13000 rpms.

The 408 is just begging for a 3.3L Whipple.

I think anything less than that and you will not realize the potential of the 408, unless you go turbo.

That said, I wonder what off-idle torque in the 700-800 lb/ft range would feel like...

i found a 2300chart >> http://not2fast.wryday.com/turbo/map..._lys2300ax.pdf

looks to me like at 15000rpm it should be around 32m^3, that converts to 1130cubic foot/min. multily that by .7 and you get around 800fwhp. now deduct for drive losses(~65kw or 90hp) you end up at around 700fwhp. now deduct driveline losses of 20% and you end up at 560rwhp.

560rwhp isn't all that great for a boosted 408. it is hard to say how high you can really spin one of these units.

wow, i have no idea what you just said, but i understand the end result. Not enough HP for me. I will say this, I definately can't get a $10000 engine AND a bigger blower or turbo. I already am gonna have a hard time getting a $7000 engine.

What if I just upgrade my pistons and rods and add a cam and heads? Any thoughts on that? Is it the rods that are first to go on these engines? I dynoed at 401rwhp on 11lbs then only 416 on 15lbs. No knock. I don't think the belt was slipping much either. I think the stock manifolds and stock heads were probably the limiting factor. This is not the SAE hp. That was more like 433 or something. Bone stock I made 222rwhp.

Those numbers pretty well jive with my latest setup. I have the 2.2L KB which is rated for 920 CFM @ 13000 rpm. Im overspinning it to about 15lbs @ 15000RPM on a 3inch pulley. The road dyno at 13lbs on Efilive shows consistently 500-520rwhp. It seems reasonably but I will need to go to dyno soon as I can get a new tranny. Once the intercooler is in, I plan to spin well into 18000rpm. The mustang guys do that all the time and get massive horsepower.

that blower should still be prety good at your level. i would suspect a tuning issue kept you from gaining more power. what were your a/f's? how much timing? i would first suspect very low timing.

if your set on keeping the whipple then yeah a 408 would probably be more than you need. a 370 might be a good deal for you. that would be your 6.0 block and crank but add some good rods and pistons. i see the heads as optional but heads are a controversial subject in the FI world. definately want to bump up the cam.
