Default Adding an aftermarket oil cooler... questions..

Heya everyone, I have an '03 Silverado with 6.0L, STS kit w/fmic, 4L80E yadda yadda.. Anyways, my engine has an oil line going to the radiator from the oil filter area. I was going to either put the oil cooler radiator after, before or by itself and eliminate the radiator flow through. Nearest I can tell is that the oil is warmed by the radiator in the winter by running through the water system. I do pull a 32foot 5th wheel with this truck that weighs about 12k loaded, so to me a good oil cooling system should be added. I searched through the forums, but there is only a little info and nobody really has too much to say about it. Anyone with any good info is welcome..

IMO, if I added an engine oil cooler I'd probably just mimic what GM does with the trans cooler and send the fluid to the radiator cooler first and then through the external cooler.

I agree with that. On my mustang I ran an external oil cooler only and it worked great when I was racing it, but for normal driving it not allow the oil to get to the proper temp and it caused alot of problems.... Then I got another one with a temp bypass, which allowed the oil to bypass the cooler if it was not up to temp...

Are you monitoring oil temps now? If so, what are they?

Lingenfelter sells a super nice oil cooler adaptor that would replace the factory piece. Summit sells Fluidyne oil coolers in just about any shape/size to suit your needs. IMO, Unless you live in an area of the country that has very cold winters, colder than the recommended temp range of your oil, I would ditch the radiator / oil "cooler" setup and go with an aftermarket setup without a radiator loop. But then again you may not need to spend ANY money if your oil temps aren't that bad.

I do not have oil temp problems, was just putting one on to help keep it cool when I'm towing in the summer is all.
