On my original 408 I ran a 235/239-600/580-114+4 cam and I thought it was way too big. I didn't like it at all.

My last cam that the dyno numbers were based off of was a 226/226 116+2.

My new one I just stuck in and are playing with, no dyno yet, is a 220/220 112+4. I choose this for the lack of compression for the around town driving being that its about 9.5ish to 1. It also seems to help a touch on spool up as well. We will see. I pretty much dont care to make power anymore, already did that. I wanted more out of the drive. I will give this cam time and then I will switch it again to go even smaller for more around town fun. My truck does spool pretty fast though, but faster is always nicer.

I still haven't gotten the part numbers for the Diamond pistons back yet from the builder but looking at their catalog, the it looks like I may be swapping them out. I will have to measure the deck but it looks like it may be closer to 11 than 10.

My goal of a 10:1 turbo 408 was to maintain all the streetability of the stock cam 370 and still be able to push the boost when I need it. I know I can build a 8:1 370 with a 22* cam and pump 18lbs in it, I just don't want to drive a slug around town. I felt the extra cubes would aid low end torque and the forged crank would add some additional reliability to the package.

What been great about Rick's twin kit is the absolute stock like driveability when not under boost. My wife drives it all the time and loves how effortless (and quietly) it accelerates around town and when merging on the Highway, it's at freeway speed instantly without drama (the turbo lag is basically non-existant and I'll see the full 10lbs by 2500-2600 rpm). She usually drives a 6 speed M3 and tachs it out on a regular basis so I know she understands low end torque. That's one of the key reasons I pulled my TBTC and put the stock stall back in. All that and I still pull 14.5 MPG average per tank. Zippy nailed it when he said it no fun having a big, fast truck and it sucks up too much gas to drive it. I put 20k a year on my truck and I wouldn't drive it a 9 mpg even if gas was a buck. I don't want a truck that can pass everything but a Gas station...

Rick, when the shortblock shows up, I'll swing it by your shop and you can take a look at it. We can decide if I need to swap our pistons to drop it down into the mid/high nines and then you can grind me a cam. You already know what I'm looking for.

1000 AWHP, 25 MPG and drop 1000lbs...

Thanks, Rick

Longer stroke crank using different pistons and rods.

Speed Inc. seems to be a proponent of straight pattern cams in their turbo setups. And they have good success with their combos.

BTW - I'm slowly collecting parts to transform your old 5.3 into an iron 347. Bearings and Machine work are really the only things left.

Becareful of using rod size in this, might give others false info. Rod size does not determine motor CID, it only determines rod ratio.

Finally got my shortblock picked up. Looks like the deck clearance is .015" down in the bore. Using a compression calculator and bumping up to a .071 MLS gasket, I am looking at 10.17:1 static compression. I'm going to give Rick a call and see if he thinks we can make it work.
