When the engine detonates it acts more like a pile driver. Shortens the rod a few inches at a time.

Now your making stuff up! shorter rods = more rod angle= worse for RPM But it lowers compression so you can run more boost

A few inches? DAMN how long are those rods???? Is the mean piston speed changed in anyway after this so called rod shortening process?

everyone in this thread is referring to old 4.8 vs 5.3 most of which is invalid for the Gen IV engines.

The 08 4.8 is roughly 9.2:1 compression, probably flat top pistons, 243 heads.

The 08 5.3 is roughly 9.9:1 compression, probably flat top pistons, 243 heads.

if he strickly wants to run boost and can't located a 5.3 RCSB the 4.8 would be a fine choice.

4.8's are just fine and so is McCormick Vodka, but I think a 6.0 swap witf 8.5 cr is much much better

8.5:1 is going to leave power on the table... it will be VERYYYYY safe, but leave a lot on the table too I think. 10:1 would be my starting point, get the tune right, run the right gas and you're good to go.
