Truck going on dyno, should I fear for my driveshaft?

I seriously doubt you have anything to worry about. I mean it happens but really, how often? I've been up 20 runs? You guys are making ME nervous, lol.

fine print: i in no way assume any liability for anybody's driveshaft, my own excepted

That calc is for steel. Aluminum has a higher critical speed. But IMO you are correct, balance has more to do with it than strength.

Sorry Bill. The only thing I really care about is my transfer case. The purpose of my loops would mainly be to protect the front and rear shaft from taking out the case if one broke.

I need to research my rear axle a little bit (14bolt ff), the bolts that hold the front seal/cover on the pinion would make a perfect mounting area for a rear loop. I want to see if they also hold the rear pinion support before I pull some out to make a bracket.

I am worrying too much about all this stuff, lol. I just need to strap it down and pull until the valves float.

I'm pretty sure that most all the failures have been with 1/2 ton trucks, you might be ok seeing how your a 3/4. FWIW my truck has been to 156 mph on the dyno once when I accidentally put it in 4th instead of 3rd

Totally. My DS was supposedly good to ~6100ish but took a dump at 5100/124MPH. Factory isn't going to balance a DS much past the speed limiter, just extra cost.

that's crazy, i didn't think there had been any steel failures.....that's even scarier.

I have been in the low 150's at least 15 times on the dyno.. 3rd gear pull with the 4l80e, 31.5" tires, and 3.73 gear ratio.

I did take the factory driveshaft out and have it highspeed balanced though.

I need to get mine balanced. I haven't been on the dyno yet, may not be for a while now.
