They use torque applied to the leaf springs via the differential to drive the tires into the ground. For every action there's a reaction and the reaction is the bed/rear of the vehicle lifting up.
Thats exactly what mine does even on the street if I nail it from a 20 roll you can actually feel it lift up in the rear it lets you know there working.

ok then... now that we got that part aside,

what kind of shock to use. soft, hard, type of rebound, etc... with a caltrac type bar.

You don't want to much separation with Caltacs max about 2" anymore than that you need to move up a couple of notches stiffer on the shock setting. Look real close at the rear just a slight rise.

Right. The cars I've seen that lift too much on launch, wind up "leap froging" off the line and once they're done leap frogging the rear end more or less unloads.

Your truck as one distict adavantage that I have yet to see on a stock style leaf spring NBS truck. It hangs the hoops! So do the L guys with long bars. I'm willing to bet that contributes a lot to 60ft time in your truck. I'm not saying it wont 60ft without hanging the hoops, but it certainly helps. I've racked my brain trying to think of a way to get my long-*** wheelbase EC truck to do this. Nobody makes front drag springs for our truck so were SOL there. I'm sure a 90/10 shock could be had, but who knows?

The front drag springs in my truck are for a 2nd generation GM F body . The shocks are for a B body Mopar . they don't make anything specific for an old dodge either you just have to find what will work from the other applications. The front springs were by far the best $100 spent on the front end of the truck for knocking the 60 down.
