First time out with truck....need cal-trac help
#1
I went out to Famoso raceway here in california (bakersfield), and had some 60ft issues. The truck is a RCSB 07 classic with a 5.3. The only things that I have done to it so far are: Cold air (K&N), no name 3 inch exhaust from a local shop, cal-tracs W/9000 shocks, 28inch mickey thompson ET streets, and a diablosport tune (until nelson E-mails me back my nelson tune it's all I have)........the truck just seems to spin out of the hole the same way no matter what tire pressure that I use.....each run I tried something a LITTLE different to try and figure the launch problem out.....and then one of my friends went over to another group of guys running thier silverados (that were BAD *** I might add)......and the guy with the extended cab 1500 that I saw hooking up all night said that the cal-tracs were TOO tight....I'm thinking that is my problem....I set the preload the way that the instructions did, and the back of the truck didnt drop at ALL when ever I launched it...it would just hit the tires and stay stiff....anyways....here are the two slips that I have....have a few more....but they area about the same....
60ft: 2.442
330: 6.611
1/8: 10.043
mph: 72.09
1000: 13.042
1/4: 15.622
mph: 87.14
that was with no tailgate, headlight and the end links on the sway bar were disconnected, 16psi in the tires, and I just flashed the convertor out of the hole from and idle.
60ft: 2.434
330: 6.615
1/8: 10.060
mph 71.75
1000: 13.076
1/4: 15.677
mph: 86.40
this was done with no headlight, tailgate put back on, sway bar hooked up, left off of the convertor and brakes, and 18psi in the radials....
Kind of sad times....LOL....but the DA calculator that I used off of "drag times" makes me feel a LITTLE better....LOL....I just have to sort out the cal-tracs and get them set-up a little better.....what I was thinking was doing LESS preload where the force transfer thingie isn't toutching the actual spring when I set it with the suspension hanging down with the truck up in the air.......anyone have any advice? All of the times were done with the shock settings at thier hardest to limit the rebound.....

You have to set the Cal-tracs preload with the truck sitting on the ground. If I read your description right, you adjusted them with the rearend hanging down? That wouldn't work well at all.
Also, try to have the truck set up exactly the way you're gonna race it. Somebody in the driver's seat who weighs about the same as you, the amount of fuel in the tank that you plan to race with, tailgate on or off, etc.

Do the guys who have success with them use the "adjust it until it toutches" method....or do you guys adjust the stopper piece to where is JUST ABOVE the spring?

Once it touches, go 1/4 turn tighter. Try that for a couple runs. Then go an additional 1/4 turn tighter and try a couple of runs. Compare 60' times. Experiment with different adjustments, but you should never need to go past 1 full turn(from touching). Hope this helps.

When you say "tighter" you mean make the little piece that is supposed to just "touch" the spring press against the spring more right?

nice to see another somewhat local guy, as for the other guys racing, most are jim@cal speed performance's customers, and those guys have em pretty dialed in.
get that thing to hook and post up some new numbers

When I was at the track me, my g/f, and my budy were watching all 3 of the trucks from that group of guys....pretty cool trucks....a red step side RCSB stepside, a white extended cab, and a tahoe....
My friend craig (YDTRACK on here) that got a chance to walk over to their pit said that they were pretty nice guys......I didn't get a chance to walk over because my g/f and I were hooking up the end links to my sway bar together....that was back in July so I doubt that they'd remember my truck....
I have a couple of runs on video that YDTRACK took....I guess that i-phone is good for SOMETHING...ha ha....I'm sure he'll chime in here....

also you might try a softer setting on the rear shocks.sometimes a hard setting makes the rear to stiff and it unloads the tires about 5' out.does your truck spin from the second you hit the gas or does it hook for a split second then spin.think about it.

I'm not sure....I'll have to check this weekend when I go out to Fontana with it...If the truck has the shock setting too high of a setting I thought that it just wouldnt rebound as fast....every run was with the shock setting in the maximum setting....
