I think some of the 4wd guys switch out of it at the 1-2 shift.

I just leave mine in 4hi the whole 1/4 mi. I blew up a Tcase shifting it under wot. It wears out the nylon shoes on the shift fork quick if your making power.

I push the button, and it "appears" to switch to 2wd, but my truck very obviously hangs up in 4x4 until I coast.

It does come out of 4wd, this I am sure of on MY rig because if I disengage too soon

Ideally you want to disengage 4wd as early as possible but maintain traction. For me, it is well after the 1-2 shift.

Same here, I disengage when it settles into 2nd, I have shifted out a little soon and it definitely spins the tires.

I'd think it would be harder on the transfer case parts if you pulled it out of 4wd at WOT.
