Last week, I finally found some free time and installed the first two performance modifications to my truck.
2004.5 Cummins 600 RAM 3500 dually
automatic transmission
I installed the TST PowerMax box first, and everything was straightforward. A series of plug-in harnesses and the box was installed. The only bad experience was drilling/tapping the exhaust manifold for the EGT sensor probe. That cast iron is a bitch to tap, make sure you use a good quality tap to do it. I tried it first with an el-cheapo Taiwan tap, but it wasn't sharp enough to cut threads in cast iron.
The TST goes up to HP level 9 and TQ level 9. On the stock tranny, you can only go up to 3/3 for both. Thats around 100 rwhp and 200 ft-lbs added. This truck WOKE up! I've owned the truck 2 years, and haven't done anything to it until now. I can't believe how much more responsive this huge truck is with that box installed. Its like never-ending nitrous
The next day, I installed the MBRP "cool duals" catback exhaust. The system is stainless, and fit nicely. The instructions really sucked though, they really need to be more clear on which exhaust hangers to reuse, and which direction the tailpipe hangers should face relative to the frame rails. I wasted probably an hour just on those small details, since it would only fit one way, and there were 6 possible ways that you had to try in order to find the right way.
Exhaust sound is definitely louder than stock, but not bad at all. A hint of drone at 70 mph, but not bad. Didn't have nearly the seat of the pants feeling the TST box had, but it supposedly is worth 20-25 rwhp over the factory catback. That factory muffler was HEAVY!
Best part of working on a dually, I didn't even have to jack the truck up to change out the exhaust. Just my trusty Sawz-All and some hand tools. Did it in my driveway in less than 2 hrs. Would have been an hour if their instructions were better written.
I'll get some pics of the truck when it gets washed.
