Default Help, 98 Crew Cab Dually 454 upgrade performance

This is a very nice truck, it has 52000 actual miles, 2wd w/auto transmission.

I plan to start towing alot with this truck and want to increase the performance.

Not exactly sure what to do, looking for better exhaust but not alot to chose from.

I've been reading alot about the right compression, cam and heads and while I know what these are I'm not an expert. I do know this is not like building a Street Motor. Naturally I would like not to go into the bottom end and hope not to spend a ton.

Help, I need an expert!

Thanks!

L29 heads are a-ok for a mild cam and towing performance. Call comp get them to grind a cam for you and get it dyno tuned and it will run day and night difference. I had a 98 I did this to and was very pleased when the truck got totaled by a cow I put the motor and nv4500 into my 90 4x4 burban and still love it.

Agreed. Give comp cans a call and tell them your plans. They will set you up with a good cam. Also you might want to look into some headers for it also if you plan on putting exhaust on it. It'll just help compliment everything. I wouldn't think you would need a tune after the cam swap, towing cams aren't usually too aggressive.

While it'll run without a tune, it won't run nearly as well. There's some room for improvement on the stock tune anyways.
