90 350 TB Perf. tips?
#1
I'm just wondering if the computer can be tuned in this year, its stock, i like the way it runs, the only complaint is it throws the SES light on when driveing on the interstate at 60-65, but around town, no light, i've noticed when pulling hills the temp gauge will increase some, nothing crazy, it has a new radiator also, could it be running alittle lean at these speeds, i did gradually run it up to 85 for about a mile, then slowed back to 60, but when i pulled the next incline, it wanted to ping, if anyone could be of help to possible quirks these year trucks could have, i'm all ears. One other thing that it does is, sometimes it'll idle funky, hard to really discibe, i've thought about converting it over to carb, & maybe a set of headers & duals to get away from the computer & add some power, i haven't checked the FP yet.
Thanks.
Thanks.

It would be a good idea to find out what codes it is throwing and go from there. O2 sensor is cheap and easy to replace.
Check the timing. Stock is set at 0* degrees. You just unplug this little single lead, tan wire that is tucked into that black junction on the passenger side firewall (Engine light will come on, don't worry). That removes the computer advance, and let's you check the actual timing. After you're done, reconnect that wire.
Check the IAC valve
The TBI might need to get rebuilt (not very expensive)
Plugs and wires okay?
Distributor cap okay?
Coil okay?
It could have carbon buildup too. Use a high quality gasoline with an additive like Lube Control's FP60 (Techron on steroids). You could also try seafoam or one of those other engine cleaners, most are just like solvents. I wouldn't put them in the oil though.
Oh, and the computers are completely tunable. They are pretty old school, so a new chip needs to be made anytime you change something, not quite as easy as reflashing an OBDII PCM. Plenty of places do mail order tunes.

A google search and a paperclip in the upper right two pins of the OBD port can tell you what the code is.
Have you checked the ports for the EGR? They tend to plug up with carbon pretty easily on these TBI motors.
