1984 C10 Rebuild...Beginner need advice
#1
My father n law gave me a 1984 chevy c10 custom deluxe stepside. Has a 41.l l6 and a 3 speed on column, The truck is very rough, has been sitting for over a decade.....but its free. Im a beginner when it comes to vehicles, i mean i can do the basic stuff: brakes, oil changes, shocks, electrical work etc. Not sure where to begin or if its even worth restoring. I figured it was a good truck to learn on. Any advice or tips would be appreciated. Recommend any good reads. I figure that i would make a list of everything it needs to get road worthy and then go from there. Here is some pics and i apologize for all the junk, my father n law uses it as storage lol

So what did you do to his daughter???? Just bustin your stones teckky....u have your hands full. When I get one like this I pull all the hardware(nuts, bolts, etc.) maybe a good bedside or fender and keep looking for a project while hauling it to the jyard. The tab keeps getting bigger on these old restos and it doesn't take long to burn up 10k....conservatively! Best of luck on it and if your close to Philly I will be glad to hook your up with a 454ci pullin truck that needs a lot less work.

For me, rust is the ultimate deciding factor. I would pull it out to a good clean area and give it a solid inspection. Check the frame, cab corners, floor pans etc. and if there bad (rust), I would pass. Just because it sat for so long doesn't necessarily mean its not worth it though. The K10 in my sig sat in the same condition as that stepper since 1999, before I hauled it to my house last October. Amazingly mine had only a small spot of rust at the drivers side lower cab corner.
If you do decide to get it, count on replacing all fuel components and the brake system will need a solid going through. You will probably need to replace most of the bushings, as well as the steering components. That stuff adds up VERY fast.
Go ahead and get it since its free. If anything, your gonna learn a great deal by playing with it and might just make a buck or two when you sell it.
