Default How to tell what rearend I have?

Hey Guys I haven't been on here in awhile and I have a question. I just bought a 2001 Chevy 2500 HD. It has a 6.0 , auto trans , 2wd, regcab. I just wanted to know how do I find out what rearend it has and what the gear ratio is. The rear does whine a bit only when I am on the gas but when I let off the gas it is quiet. So there is something up with the rearend.

I have a 99 sierra that did the same thing so I had it rebuilt and upgraded everything. 2 grand later it is bullet proof.lol Now on this 2001 Chevy I just want to go cheap as possible so I have to weigh the odds of getting a junkyard replacement or to rebuild.

Thanks in advance

you most likely have the 10.5 rear end the 3/4 ton gas trucks come with these usually and the diesels get the 11.5 aam rear.

ratio will be determined by vin.

Look in the glove box, find the RPO sticker. Write down and post up all of your G-codes. They ID the gear ratio & if it's got the gov-bomb.

Ok the only codes in the glove box that start with a "G" is GT5, and GMC.
It does have a 14 bolt rear cover. Also I have been looking at junkyards and they ask if it is full floating or semi floating axles. Brakes are discs in the back if that helps.

GT5 is 4.10s. If it's the HD, it should be a 14b full-floater.

Yes it is a HD Truck I was just looking thru some papers I found in the glove box and on the papers from Les Schwab it says that the truck had a brake job last year on the rear. It says that it has semi floating axles. Is there a set in stone way to make sure about the axles semi or full floating? Thanks for the help

There's a way to tell by looking at the rear hub, but I can't remember exactly what it is, so I'll shut up.

It's a 10.5" full floater.
You need a Duramax or an 8100 to get a 11.5" full-floater.
If it were not HD it would be a 9.5" semi-float.

14bff axle shafts are bolted to the outside of the hub.
