My roomate has a 1995 6.5L Turbo Deisel. The shaft is worn and leaking oil-so we were thinking-why not upgrade. I've done a few searches but came up with nothing for a bigger aftermarket trubo. Any suggestions-a mostley bolt on upgrade would be good-but we could fabricate something. Thanks guys.

 

If you push too much air in those 6.5L engines they will crap out, I think the max you can run is 12 lbs. of boost w/ intercooler, stock is 8 lbs. The reason why there are not much performance mods out is because the compresion ration is 21:1. If you get the 17:1 piston then you can run a bigger turbo and a lot more boost, but these piston are only designed for the non-electronic injector pump (93) or marine engines.

Check www.dieselplace.com I'm not trying to take away from this forum, but there is a place specific for 6.5L engines over there and some folks with experience with these engines. I would just use an OEM turbo as long as you are useing the hi compression pistons and don't intend on making big power. An engine with 18:1 pistons will benefit from a larger turbo. These trucks with a stock engine can be modified to produce power levels similar to a stock Duramax. It just takes an intercooler, chip or computer programming, boost control, and other normal bolt ons.

Hey cbrich-i was misstaken-he has a 94 model. I think this means that he has mechanical injection and 17:1 compresion. What are your thoughts. By the way ssdeisel is an awesome site-thanks

 

The 94's have an electronic fuel pump driver. This is prone to failure at some point, but it isn't a huge issue to get up a working again. No production engines in the trucks had the lower compression, all were 21:1 i think. The 18:1's are just aftermarket. Those last sites I listed have decent prices and products.

 

He is right. The low compression pistons are only available through aftermarket. The 93 6.5L engines are the only 6.5L with a mechanical injection pump but they still have 21:1 compression.

My dad has a 94 K3500 Crew cab, it is a very good truck but keeping the SES light off is a task in its self.

3 of best mods (really not mods) are a PMD cooler (FSD Heat-Sync), cooling system upgrade and complete exhaust system. The PMD cooler and cooling system upgrade in my opinion is a must. The exhaust needs to be complete, from the turbo to the tail pipe. I recommend SS Diesel exhaust system because they are the only ones I know that make a 4" kit for the 6.5L and it includes a high flow downpipe. There could be more exhaust kits out there since I purchased one (4-5 years ago).

 

yeh we already have a 3''downpipe-and 4''everything else. He will be purchasing the chip and resistor and triple gauges from ssdeisle in a few weeks. thanks for the responses_ill let you know how it goes>
