Sparing a lot of the details, I have a stock, replacement catback bolted to my Ebay headers, and I decided to put a Magnaflow 12589 muffler on yesterday.....I have a lift, and air tools, oh...and an empty acetylene bottle....easy, right?

Well, no, LOL...

My favorite air chisel bit snapped before I got either end of the existing muffler cut loose from the pipes, so hammer and chisel by hand, woohoo...

Get the old whisper quiet AP brand 100# muffler off and sit the Magnaflow up to see where I'm at.....I see that I'm at UpTheCreeksville....

I didn't realize/remember, the stock pipes, and stock replacement pipes are that insane, oddball 2-3/4" size, and this Magnaflow is 3"....oops.

Anyway....

For you guys who have used this, or any other 3" muffler on your 2-3/4" pipes....did you use some sort of "adapter", "spacer", "reducer", or just weld it in, or have it welded in?

I'm trying/hoping NOT to weld it in if possible, but if that's the best solution, then I'll have to just weld it in....

Thanks. That's worth a shot if I can find one local. I have a 3" one on there now, which obviously won't get tight enough on the 2-3/4" pipe.

My 99 actually had 2 7/8 od pipe and I put a piece of 3" pipe over the factory pipe then the 3" muffler over that. The 3inch will have about a 1/16 gap in between it and the 2 7/8 od pipe so I welded the connection.

Mine had 27/8" just expanded the pipe slightly and welded up.

Hmmm. That's weird...Maybe because mine is an aftermarket, stock replacement, it is/was 2.75"? In fact, I'd swear the front pipe's O.D. is less than 2.75"...

I may just suck it up and buy a Dynomax front pipe for $100 and be done with it. My luck has always been that whatever was welded, is always the first place to rust away.

Easiest most secure way is to pie cut the bigger pipe lengthwise in about 1 inch cuts going around the perimeter then hammer it down to close in on the smaller pipe then seal it up with a mig welder. Super easy.
