Default Anyone have direct comparisons with an TBSS/SSR intake swap on a 4.8?

I have an LS1 and an SSR intake to choose from on my 4.8 project. I like the looks and hood clearance of the LS1 much better. I know the recent intake shootout showed some seriously impressive gains with the SSR over the LS1 intake (see attached). This was also on a pretty healthy cam/head 6.0 engine.

I’m curious what a near factory 4.8 would gain between the 2. I’ll be running the Howards version of the GM hot cam (219/228 @ 112 .525) and untouched 241 heads with dual springs. Will also be a pretty low back pressure twin turbo engine, but I don’t think that matters for what I’m asking.

Here it the link to the intake tests if you’re not familiar with it.

Are you referring to the tbss intake. If so I would go with it over the ls1. It will outflow the ls1 intake all across the board.

I'm sure it will pickup, just curious if it's worth the time/effort/$ and ugliness.

They tested a 78mm TB on the LS1 and a 90mm TB on the Truck intake. I'll have to buy a 90mm TB to run the TBSS. I'm nervous about running a china TB and even those aren't cheap with the senors and all. I have the LS1 intake and TB/sensors ready to go now. I could buy the adapter cheap and run the LS1 TB on the TBSS intake... but will that defeat the purpose of the intake upgrade?

Figure looking at the average numbers the TBSS picked up 26hp and 26tq. Roughly 6.3% of the NA power of the tested engine. 6% NA power increase on a 300hp 4.8 is like 18 hp. Not sure I'll even make 300 NA.

Alot of bench racing I know, just curious to see a real world test. I've seen 20whp improvements going from a 78mm to a 90mm on an ls6 manifold on bone stock LS1's. So the TB can make a big diff on the NA deals. Would be better if they used the 3 to 4 bolt adapters and ran the same TB on all the manifolds.

ls1 intake is the weakest of the bunch. the truck manifold out performs the LS1 intake. I would even say that the truck intake outperforms the ls6 intake. if you plan to run the truck accessories, consider the time/cost associated with the conversion. LS1 intake to truck accessories is not a direct swap.

Thanks for the input.

Like I said I’m aware the truck intake outperforms the LS1. My question is by how much on a smaller 4.8 engine. I'm over on the truck forums hoping to find someone that has dyno tested one on a 4.8.

Trying to decide if the cost VS performance is worth it in my application. I’ll need to buy a TB and cut my hood to run it. If it’s not picking up more than 8-10hp through the RPM band, it’s not worth the time/effort/$/ugliness for what I’m doing. I’d rather have the space under the hood and extra money for other items. If it picks up 25-30hp that’s a different story and worth the effort IMO.

Peak power isn’t a huge concern this is a twin turbo setup with mild goals. Though getting into boost more quickly is always nice, esp with the 4.8.

****. I missed that it was a turbo setup up front. save your hood and run the ls1 intake. if you want more power, turn up the boost.
