Default to be or not to be? transmissons

i have a 72 chevy, im in the process of buying a ls1 for it. i was going to go with a carb set up i plan on having 500+ hp i have a th400 in it now but need something with overdrive. the 700r4 is my other option but i would like to get a 4l80e but i couldnt do that because theirs no computer on my truck, or could i ? i will get my tranny built for free, im on a budget , the truck will be a dd ill hot rod it around a but though so i guess what would be my best bet ? could i use a 4l80e or would i be better off building a 700r4 or find a th400 with overdrive? excuse my ignorance and thanks!

Maybe you should consider doing the whole harness. I like the tuneability of fuel injection and I really like the control I have over my transmission with my computer.

You can buy stand alone controllers for the 4l80e and still stay carbed. TCI, Powertrain control solutions, FAST, and compushift all make stand alone controllers for the 4l80e.

I would also recommend retaining the computer control for the LS1/4L80E swap.

By the time you buy a carb intake setup, a carb, plumbing, etc you could have gotten the thing running with EFI for just a bit more and much more driveable and enjoyable to tune.
