Tranny install problem
#1
I've finally got the 4l80 into the truck but I ran into a major problem once I tried to testdrive it. When I threw it into reverse I went forward instead. When I try to take the selector all the way to 1 it stops at 2. So I'm guessing the cable is in need of some adjustment. According to the Haynes manual I'm supposed to disconnect the white coupler on the shift cable by the frame and adjust the spring. Well I tried that and now I can't get the lever to go any farther than neutral. I have to force it to even go that far. And it still wants to go forward in the R setting. Any help would be great!!!!!

Did you swap cable brackets or reuse the one from the 60E? They both place the linkage cable in different places and are not interchangeable. First thing to do is make sure you used the correct one.

The tranny that I picked up had all the brackets on it yet. The only thing that I reused was the cable itself. When I disconnect the cable I can shift through the gears manually with little effort but its when I hook the cable back up is when everything goes crazy.

I haven't fully tested that yet. I let the parking brake go and I was able to move slightly. I can't honestly say that it went under its own power. I'll try that tomorrow. I think I'm going to put the rear up on blocks and see if I can get it to shift by manually moving the rod without the cable. That should tell me if its just the cable or if its something worse. Thanks for the help so far guys.

Is th NS switch/ selector in the correct position? should be facing forward, at a slight angle. Not sure if I'm describing this very well, but hope you get the picture...it might have moved when you disconnected the shifter cable.

I know exactly what your saying. I can turn that with a pair of pliers pretty easily and switch from park, reverse, neutral, and so on. But when I attach the cagble back up is when it goes crazy. That and I really have to pull hard to get enough cable to put it on when the selector is in the park position. Is that right?

Well I'm waiting on a buddy of mine to show up to help check that. In the meanwhile I put the truck up on jacks and manually shifted it into neutral and it worked fine. So that maybe a little ray of hope.
I'm pretty sure it has to be a cable issue. Now with the cable detached or connected it only allows me to go as far as neutral on the column shifter. When my buddy shows up I'm going to fully test the tranny with the truck on jackstands. If that checks out then I'll start messing around with the cable. It might just need to be adjusted.

Well I put the truck up on jackstands and attemted to shift it manually. Well I think I'm just going to burn this thing to the ground.
I don't have reverse. I go from park to what seems like neutral to drive. Apperently I skip reverse. What the hell is going on? Could I have set something up wrong in the shift kit? Keep in mind this is a junkyard tranny that I was told worked. It goes P N D 3 2. It won't go all the way into 1 and it seems to skip neutral. I mean it will click into neutral manually but it acts like reverse. Any suggestions.
