The cluster might have a bad stepper motor.

Scanner rpm gets it's signal from the crank sensor. Tach output to cluster is generated by the cam sensor. Hence why if you connect an aftermarket tach you have to set it up for a 4 cyl signal. PCM red connector pin 10 is the tach out.

I'm just explaining why you can show RPM with a scan tool but no dash tach. Since it's intermittent I would look at the pin in the PCM connector. Clusters come out easy too. You might try reseating the cluster connector or look for a broken solder on the cluster circuit board.

Also P0654, RPM Output Circuit, is a No MIL code so if it is setting that code it won't turn the SES light on. You will have to check for codes with a scan tool to see if it is setting

So I bought another Speedo cluster mainly because I wanted the trans temp gauge but the tach is still not working so any other ideas. Someone on another forum said the Ign Switch does that make sense to anybody.
