I got the old Hypertech for it which wasn't cheap at that time and it's basically a worthless tuner. They could for more $$ custom tune it for mods, but their "plain" tune was so bad I'd hate to rely on it for anything. Be neat to hack it and use it as an interface, but WAY beyond my skills.
A scanner just lets you look at the live data that is allowed in the software and check or clear trouble codes.

A tuner lets you change that data , create logs for reference and other editing features

A suite lets you do both and that is what you need for serious results.

Does this make sense?

Has anyone on here done some sort of "hack" on the Hypertech tuner?

Thanks. That's what I thought but I'm still a carb/jet kind of guy. Although my wideband has helped that out ALOT. Too many options for tuning and I could sure mess a computer up!! kind of like starting to change jets, air bleeds, power valves without a wide band.

You would just think if this "tuner" can do all those vehicles it wouldn't be that hard to interface a "suite" to do it also. But then I'm not a programmer!

It would be nice to be able to hack the darned old Hypertech or use it as some kind of interface.

One of my Corvette buddies remembers some interface to hook a laptop to the mid 80s to tune WITHOUT burning a new chip.Doesn't remeber whose it was, and can't find a similar one out there now.

If you just want to adjust shift points, you can call up hypertech and get one of their sorry *** modules, abouth the only thing they're good for is adjusting WOT shift points and firmness.

Those with TC or Jet DST can get MXscan from moates for pretty cheap and it does your scanning and data logging with the tuner.

For anyone with a 96-99 C/K truck thats wants full tuning, you can always do a 12200411 pcm swap and then you have full tuning with HPTuners, EFILIve, etc. as well as many other features of the much improved pcm. Its very cheap, I think I have $130 in my swap. Just hit up pacificp forum and look at the 0411 swap twin turbo thread for more info.

I've got the increased firmness from the Hypertech, barely can tell over stock.

The MXscan addition might be something to look at adding.Thanks.

My buddy has a Snap On scanner that can do real time logging. He has a 454 dually he has played with some with the JET mainly doing timing curve changes and has said it's really perked it up. You can even play with how much the knock sensor pulls out in various ways.

The Jet/TunerCATS tuners give you control over the same parameters as the other tuners available. You really have to have an understanding of what you're looking at - this is not "Tuning for Dummies." tuning functionality is there. My experience with this product is from TunerCATS. They have a support forum and respond in email quickly. When the OBD-II product was young (the OBD-I TunerCATS has been around for a LONG time) a group of us from the other forum bought it at the same time. We found a few issues and suggested a few features, all of which were quickly fixed, implemented, and distributed to existing owners.

As has already been mentioned, Jet DST and TunerCATS OBD-II cannot do logging, you need a different product for that. Logging is mandatory if you're going to do any tuning - it is essential to analyzing what you're starting with to decide what to change, and then to study the results of those changes. You could buy MXScan or AutoTap seperately, for example. I use AutoTap, I've had it for years. It has a "dashboard" and will export logged data into CSV files that can be opened by Excel. It works satisfactorily but has always had differnt bugs and a crumby interface. Every time I've submitted a bug to them they basically tell me to go blow myself. As if it will magically go away. "Reboot" wtf...

EFI Live seems to have a well staffed and well-funded development department. The work they've done bringing custom operating systems into our hands is something that really sets them apart.

Hypertech can't even be considered a "Tuner". It's not a tool like these other products, it's a one size fit's all tweak-in-a-box is all.

There was some mention of using the Hypertech to firm up shifts. I recommend against that. They do that only with line pressure increases rather than with apply volume increase like a shift kit does. Line pressure increases are hard on the thrust washers and will lead to premature failure.
