what scan tool are you trying to use? call the manufacturer of the software first.

I was thinking along the same lines before I bought hp tuners, didnt do any research on it but I believe you will have to make your own the software manufacturers dont sell them seperately for obvious reasons

Here is a good one I have used http://obddiagnostics.com/

Free software download (you can dowmload and play around to see if you like it)

Build your own cable from parts and plans (real cheap) of but a cable ready to plug and play (still inexpensive)

This is the information from the website

Question 12:
My PC doesn't have a serial port. What can I do?
Answer:
Some newer laptop computers don't have serial ports, but they do usually have at least one USB port. There are a number of converter cables available which also use a device driver program to create a serial port for these machines. Most of them do not work in DOS mode, but only for windows. The driver that comes with the converter cable must be compatible with your version of windows of course, and the USB ports must be functioning, both in hardware and in the operating system and in the drivers for the convertor cable. In general, obtaining a proper convertor and setting it up may require a bit of expertise and knowledge of your particular system. Some users have reported good results using converter cables, and a few have had problems with them. I won't be able to give you detailed instructions for the installation or checkout of these devices. If you have a port installed and wish to test it, these port testing instructions may be helpful.

(note: for port testing instructions, go to the website and go to the help section)
