Hypertech or Tunercats program for 96 5.7L
#2
IMO neither does much of anything... at least not bang for buck wise. A mail order tune or buy a tuner is the best bang for the buck. Wish I'd known that when I got a Hypertech a couple years back. Live and learn.

I dont think you really know what Tunercats is, my friend. Tunercats OBD2 allows you to do full PCM reflashing with OVER 500 tales that can be changed, it allows you to do pretty much what the PRO PCM Tuners can do.
I have removed TM, raised shift points, disabled rear O2's, disabled EGR reporting, fimed theshifts, raised speed limiter to 255 mph, raised rev imiter, shortened shift time etc etc.
The Tunercats OBD2 setup is $379.00 including 1 defn. file.
Here are the dfinition files:
"OBD2_07 1996 - 1997 Vortec Trucks (4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L, 7.4L)
OBD2_06 1998 - 2000 Vortec Trucks (4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L, 7.4L)
OBD2_02 1999 - 2000 LS1 Trucks (4.3L, 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L)
OBD2_03 2001 - 2002 LS1 Trucks (4.3L, 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L)
OBD2_04 2003 - 2005 LS1 Trucks (4.3L, 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L)
OBD2_08 1996 - 1997 Camaro/Firebird/Corvette/Impala LT1
OBD2_09 1997 - 1998 Camaro/Firebird/Corvette LS1
OBD2_01 1999 - 2001 Camaro/Firebird/Corvette LS1
OBD2_05 2002 - 2003 Camaro/Firebird/Corvette LS1
OBD2_10 2004 Corvette
OBD2_12 2004 GTO
OBD2_13 2004 - 2005 Cadillac CTS-V
OBD2_14 2006 LS1 Trucks (4.3L, 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L)
The OBDII Tuner package sells for $379.95 and includes the following:
OBDII Tuner Program on CD
OBDII/RS232 Interface
OBDII Cable
RS232 Cable
Your choice of one Vehicle Definition File
Additional Vehicle Definition Files can be purchased for $79.95 each.
As with all our software, the OBDII Tuner program is not VIN locked to a single vehicle and as a registered user you are always eligible for free updates to the software and Vehicle Definition Files."
Tunercats OBD2 is the only flash/tuner software/hardware for the 1996-2000 Vortec 305, 350 and 454.
Once you pay $79.00 for 1 definition file, you can tune as many vehicles from that year/make of vehicle as you want.
A new product called MXScan is comming out soon, it will add the scanner/logger function to Tunercats and is wideband O2 compatible.
hypertech is nothing like Tunercats.
With Tunercats, you could have as many difernt tunes for your vehicle that you want. You could have 20 tunes for 1 truck if you wanted. You just hook up the cable to teh ALDL port of your truck, load Tunercats, read your PCM to your laptop or desktop, make changes to the PCM tune, save a copy of the original tune plus the changed tune to your PC, then reflash the changed PCM tune or the original tune or some other tune a friend with Tunercat e-mailed to you to your trucks PCM, wait 10 seconds turn the key and away yu go.
Tunercats OBD2 is a full flash/tuner package, the logger/scanner MXScan is suppose to be coming.

To answer the quetsion which is better, Tunercats or hypertech?
Well Tunercats is way out of the Hypertech's league, Tunercats is a full custom tuning program with PCM reading and flashing software.
if you have any questions post back, I am very new t personal custom PCM tuning, but I'll try to answer any questions.
I dont want to pay anyone to do my tuning anymore, its impossible to get the perfect tune thru the mail, every trucks setup and operating variables are different.

I have tunercat and highly recommend it if you are willin to learn how to tune!It is alot of fun but also alot of reading and time will need to be put into it to learn but you can do it.Hypertech and tunercat are 2 completly different thing bud,no where near the same, hypertech sucks.

just keep in mind tunercat is not a handheld like hpp its a hardware/software package...you'll need a laptop & want to learn how to tune your truck. There arent many sites that are out there with people that know much about tunercats or how to tune the older vortec motors, but I would still say its a better investment then HPP is.

I think I can help people out about tuning the older vortec motors. There are a few others I know about from another site but I got my truck to idle with a the little cam I have when a tuner that I had before could not get to idle without surge.I have spent countless hours on the L31 motors and I have touched many many tables.
