I just dropped a newer 5.3 motor in my wife's Burban, but new motor has no egr, she is throwing a code.

Can I run a jumper at the plug to fool it or do I have to buy a programmer? I could always put the old egr on, but that sounds like like a lot of work!

you would need to disable the code via programmer or newer PCM that wont look for it.

 

If your in california theres a good chance you will fail smog since the truck originally came with egr. California sucks, it dosent matter that the new motor didnt use it the smog equipment has to match the truck. Hopefully the smog tech will be in a hurry and not notice it. I just did a 6.0 swap a few months back and i had to keep everything that was originally in the truck, even the AIR injection which meant i had to use my old exhaust manifolds.

I would tune out the EGR codes and put in the GM parts to block off the EGR parts.....makes it basically factory. The later non-EGR motors have the same heads, cam, intake, etc.....

 

Is this is true I'd remove the EGR today.

The problem is the sticker under the hood will say that the car has the EGR, and the smog tech, if he has it head out of his ***, will be able to visually see that there is no EGR. It would pass the diagnostic test like you said I imagine. If there is no sticker I think they can still look it up in a database by VIN.

Correct. California is THE ABSOLUTE WORST about the smog and most smog techs are scared shitless of losing their smog liscence if they let things slide. It will pass the sniffer with the right tune, but when he puts in your make model and VIN number in the smog computer it will say EXACTLY what your truck is supposed to be equipped with. The last time I had mine smogged the tech told me exactly what the computer said. He said I should have EGR and A.I.R injection as well as a normal PCV.
