Default DIY Tuning... Where to begin?

In the next month or so I should be getting the turbo on the truck and need to have it tuned. I have considered going to a professional dyno tuner but I would like the ability to tune it myself. My nearest tuner is 150 miles away and I don't particularly like them given past experiences. Also, I would like the ability to change settings on my own. If I want to up the boost I don't want to drive 300 miles round trip for another dyno tune, plus the cost of the tune and gas.

I am very new to tuning. I've done some minor fuel table tuning on my Buell and R1, but this is a whole different animal. I am leaning towards EFILive because it has the ability to activate lean cruise. Fuel economy is a huge concern for me with gas nearing $5/gal here.

What EFILive package will I need? Tune and scan?
Who has the best prices on this software?
Any good turbo tuning links for beginners like myself?
Anyone willing to share their turbo tune files as a reference or starting point? I have the trial version of EFILive and was hoping to open up a tune file and start looking around.

Any other tips are appreciated, thanks!

Make sure you get a wideband. You can actually get the software and wideband together and save some money. You could also get the wideband, software, and a tune to get you started for a deal. It can be very overwhelming at first. I would suggest the software, wideband, and tune to start with.

I have a wideband with extra wires for logging. Haven't tried it yet obviously. By a tune you mean like one from Blackbear that comes with the software?

Yeah, I think any of the sponsors could help you, but that is exactly what Justin gets into.

So do I need both the tune and scan tools? I see I can get both or get them separately. I'm guessing the scan tool is for data logging and the tune tool is for adjusting the tune file?

I found a stock tune file for my truck and started looking through it in the EFILive demo. The amount of stuff is pretty overwhelming, but I have a good grasp on what most of the settings do. One thing I'm concerned about is that my truck is a T56, and a lot of the settings can vary based on what gear you're in. Not sure how to get around that.
