I have a partially clogged converter. Running alot hotter in the front of the converter than behind the converter. Can that cause a rough idle at times and when driving make it feel like something is stopped up even though you can hear the exhaust some? When you get down on the throttle it really feels weird like it is stopped up.

Does anybody know an easy way to determine if I am running rich or lean that would have messed up the converter? It is an OBD 1 TBI injected truck. My fuel pressure is reading 13 PSI.

 

Find someone / a shop w/ a wideband and have them check your afr. One of my cats blew out so i just hacked the little bastard off. I would reccomend putting a new one in if you take that one out though. Oh yah! totally forgot. Is it 96 or newer? All vehicles are supposed to have a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty on smog equipment. But i doubt your under 100,000....

 

It is a 91 and the converter is an aftermarket one from 2 years ago. I have been taking it to shops and I have gotten tired of dealing with them. They say they don't see that it is running rich or lean but I think from having a purple converter that it is doing something wrong. I wanted to buy something I could use myself if I could. There is so much out there I don't know what to get. I didn't want to spend alot of money but I need to come up with a way to see how far off I am from the 14.7/1 ratio.

I am keeping this truck original as it is a show truck and it has to go through inspection. I just want to find some kind of way of checking the mixture because I want it to run like it is suppose to.

 

i'd say lean to make it hot enough to go purple, but then i'd say rich or oil is getting through it to clog them up.

 

really you can take the o2s out to see if it runs better,are if you can unbolt it any way in front of the verter.how many miles them are not know to go out unless their is a rich condition where the fuel would be getting in their then burnning and melting the cone.are you have a very lean condition and the temp r very high and melting the cone.
is the fuel pressure droping any when given it gas.

 

Take the cat. off and knock all the junk out of it and put it back on . It will still look stock and you will know if that is your problem.

 

It is welded on and I don't have any way of taking it off and putting it back on. I don't have a way to check fuel pressure when I am driving around. I have an OBD 1 and I don't know how to determine if it is rich or lean. If I had a gm tech 1 scan tool but I don't. I am trying to determine the exhaust temps and use that as a guide. Guy at the muffler shop said 400 temps were okay and 500-600 would be lean.
