Default 96 vs 98

i have a 96 gmc sierra 1500 that i bought new and i'm about to put a new motor in but i have computer questions. what's the difference between the 96 computer and the 98 computer? seems nobody can tune the 96's other then hypertech(which i have and it's crap) and the 98 which efi live, hp tuners, and looks like just about everybody else can play with? can i just swap in a 98 computer after i have the vin changed or is there something else i need to do?

i was going to do a ls swap but for cash and time reasons i may just find another vortec block to rebuild and swap my heads and stuff onto. after 307,xxx on the block i'm starting to pick up just a hint of knock in the lower end and it's starting to burn oil

They could be different but if you use efi live you can convert to a 411 pcm which you can run on a 2002 operating system.

The only real difference is the addition of VATS and a improved board. The 96 computers were notorious for failure. To go from 96 to 98 you gotta move a few pins around and delete VATS and it will work perfectly.

thanks for the info 01w96 that's good to know...and come to think of it i did have computer problems the first 2 years i had the truck and tried to use hypertech. burned up 3 computers and hypertech kept blaming it on me

blazinblue doesn't the 411 pcm's use different sensors? and what are the benefits to the 411's besides running efilive? i heard some computers from gto's could be tuned to run 16:1 afr for highway cruising. to make 1 of the newer pcm's work would i need a newer harness or just repin my existing?

Anything more than the 98 pcm upgrade is just overkill for how it sounds like you want to use the truck.

HP tuners can tune the 98 black box also.
