I would bet it's one of the pulleys. I had an 07 Avalanche with the 5.3 that I had a similar issue with. Took some time trouble shooting but eventually replaced a pulley and the alternator and fixed the problem.

i was gonna say, when my alternator was going out, it had a pretty high pitched whine. Further along the RPM's I went, the louder it got. Replaced alternator and only other whine I heard was from the maggie. :p
