Yes, muscle cars are predominately 2 door, v8, RWD cars. The 6 cylinder versions are what is known as the base model; they are what keeps the EPA off of the manufacturers' backs when they have to report the estimated fuel consumption of their vehicles. Ford, Mopar, and GM did it back in the day and continue to do so. F-bodies have always had a 6 cylinder option; the first Mustangs came with a 200 cu. in. straight 6, and Mopar offered a slant 6 in several of their cars.

i'll put my opinion this way. TRUE muscle car = 2 door coupe, v8, small block or bigg block. 64-71 model. charger, challenger, duster, trans am, firebird, nova (the 2 door ones yes i know they made 4 doors) , shelby mustang cobra, Pontiac 2+2, road runner, barracuda, camaro, cutlass 442 ,chevell, malibu. i consider THOSE TRUE muscle cars., 4 bangers, v6's and turbos are for imports and daily's. not a muscle car. thats MY OPINION

This thread is pointless, all those cars you listed had v6 or straight six options just like every car of their kind did up to this day, why is it any different? ok so the 67 camaro was not a muscle car like the 2002 v6 camaro and 2010 camaro. who cares?

"muscle cars" as the term came to be back in the day was reference to the big engine V8 performance versions of what were otherwise just plain jane sedans they all had base models with 6cyl engines because as stated before some people just want the look. When I refer to a "Muscle car" I think V8 rwd and 2dr. I'm all for a V6 Camaro because without it GM wont see sales and will kill production of the car just like they did in 02, It's all about the bottom line and those of us out there that want/care about the V8 models make up a small percentage of who will actually be buying the car. Most new Mustangs and Camaro's(when they come out) will be purchased with a V6 by people of the baby boomer generation rehashing the glory days who have no interest in how fast it is, no disrespect intended for the more seasoned bunch that frequent the forum, you guys are part of the percentage that would only purchase the V8. Also 300hp from a V6! Not to shabby, the LS1 was only rated at 305-315.

Ill agree with most of the people in this thread, muscle car era ended in 71. I just wanted to make sure you saw your circular reasoning, and was a little more upfront about it than other that were saying the same thing

maybe someday, I think i might have to find one of those base models though, because that is all that will be available in my price range. a base model malibu will do. i wouldnt feel as bad tearing it apart apart and dropping an ls motor in it...
