Tell me I am stupid

Do it. I'd actually do it without advertising. I live in a small town in Missouri, more than likely, if the the guy is well liked around town, people are going to ask him about the trailer anyway, to which he can say you and others helped him get. If nothing else, I'd say do it as a favor, as I'm sure a small trailer like that would cost less than you would have been out if you had been robbed.
Also, if you don't put your business on in, and people ask him, and he's the one that says where it came from, it's only going to look that much better for you as far as a potential customer concerned because it will show you're a compassionate business owner.

you're not stupid, but if you ask him to do it for free, youre an *******.
any money seems like it would be appreciated by this guy. buy him meals, kick him down a few bucks or something. You cant expect him to do it for free.

I wouldn't want him to do it for free for sure. I buy something from him nearly daily. You never know what he will walk in the door with. I have loaned him money, but never asked for it back. He even had his own table to put stuff on in my shop last summer during the yard sale season.
He has a trailer now, but it doesn't match his mower. If I were to do the advertising, I would want it to match his mower just to make it look that much more sharp. I would probably even put a top on it so if he gets stuck out in the rain it would keep his stuff somewhat dry.
I would want to do a test with it initially, then if it didn't work, just let him keep the trailer. Knowing him, he would have his old trailer sold before sun down.

then get a small enclosed trailer
i would give the guy an incentive for going around town
i would also give the guy a bigger incentive if the customers actually said they saw it on the trailer so they came..

I have a computer shop. I do a good bit of business, but there is always room for improvement. City codes is ignorant and will only let me have a tiny 2 ft x 2 ft sign on my building.
