A NEW electric vehicle company debuted this week at the LA auto show. "RIVIAN", based out of Michigan has unveiled there all electric crew cab pickup called the "R1T", and there 7 seat SUV called "R1S". Both vehicles claim to have a 0-60 in 3 seconds and a range of 400+ miles, with an 0-80% rapid charge in 50 minutes. Both the pickup and SUV will have a payload of 800kg, with the SUV having a towing capacity of 3,500kg and 5,000kg for the pickup. The pickup's starting price for the base model is $72,500 and the SUV will start at $65,000 (AFTER federal tax rebate).

Due in late 2020, the R1S will be slightly more expensive than Rivian's pickup truck that when it goes on sale, with the base model starting at $72,500. Preorders start this week, with a refundable $1,000 deposit required. Other than its shape, the R1S (as the SUV is called) mostly matches the R1T pickup truck blow for blow. It will be available in three different battery pack configurations, with a 105kWh version capable of 240 miles of range, a 135kWh variant that can last for around 310 miles, and a top-of-the-line option with 180kWh of capacity, pushing the range over 410 miles. Those range estimates are each slightly higher than what Rivian expects its pickup truck to be able to get out of the same battery packs. (Also of note, the 180kWh version will only seat five.).

To include my opinion after you saw the pictures and got your own first reaction, I think they look clean, and I like them both.

 

Interesting...if people didnt want the volt they sure dont want this thing. Truck owners are particuluarly brand loyal, more than most other drivers. Good luck trying to convince a guy that tows stuff to give up his diesel or gas truck from the Big 3 and go electric.

 

I'd rent it.

Not ugly, but too futuristic. I would prefer to look a more contemporary SUV, but I guess they arent trying to sell to a guy like me.

Any word on towing capacity? Im curious how the range with a load is.

I think we are stuck with electric. They will make gasoline obsolete or prohibitively expensive. I hope this company makes it, I want to see more American autos.

I thought the volt was junk either way. Did you ever actually want to drive a Geo, just because it got 30-50 mpg?

I could see VW (bus types) going after the SUV. Not sure if they are still bitter about the brand after that emissions fraud they were pulling. Plus being an American made startup will help millennials.

Not sure about the pickup. Its 1/2 ton equivalent and 2-3 times the price. I'm sure they will steal some tesla customers. Not sure what there production abilities are. I don't know how tesla sales are going, but they had such a small supply for a huge demand when they started and for a while.

Aren't they handicapping the adoption of electric by making charge depots brand specific?

The way I understand it is they have universal chargers, but the brand specific ones are at higher voltage and charge quicker, and that goes for all manufacturers.
