Area 51 isn't anything special. It's a testing facility for experimental aircraft. It's where planes like the U-2 spyplane and the Sr71 blackbird where built and tested.
Its openly visible on google maps. Try looking at some well known AFB's and see how much of the map shows up.

What's cool about area 51 is that you can definitely tell there are hangers in the mountains... watch as roads suddenly end.

Are you talking about the one that comes up when you search for Johnston Atoll?

google maps has it photoshopped to be dark and limited your ability to zoom over that island. that link will explain what your looking at.
