They should have taken a FNA (fine needle aspirate) sample

 

Negative, they said they are taking the whole thing when they do it..

 

That's odd. What kind of doctor did your dad go to? I rounded with a head and neck surgeon and let me tell you, it's brutal what cancer can do to people. I had an older grizzled looking guy just break down crying when I was talking with him. It was brutal. Hopefully all is well with your father.
