The DI system usually isn't the problem. A clean AR will almost always shoot straight. From what I've seen, the problem is usually the magazines. If you see a surplus one with the circle K on the bottem, lose it. I had two that always had failure to feed. The only reason I suggest a piston design is because it's cleaner.

 

Not to be a smartass or disrespectful but any gun can run like a champ when it's clean. I do make it a point to maintain my guns very well but all the guns I own are also just as reliable without that maintenance. I do own a couple ARs, one of which being a very high end piston gun, but they aren't my go to for when I need a gun that I can put my life behind.

 

Well I guess it's really up to the operator and firearm. Personally I won't own a rifle that can't shoot .5 MOA or better which pretty much rules out damn near every auto loader short of a really high end model. Then again why pay 3k+ for the possibility of that performance when I can buy a new Savage or Remington for less than 600 and obtain .5 moa? However, that aside we are getting way off the original subject. AR's make great varmint rifles as well as great target rifles. I prefer an AK but hey I also like ranch on my baked potatoes. No rifle out there is for everyone. Personally, I think that you'll really like your AR man. Just do yourself a favor and don't attach every accessory known to man on the rails while at the range. Most of us are too polite to say it to your face, but the moment you leave "Couch Commando" is thrown around quite a bit.

Are you staying with the 5.56 or are you upping the ante with a 6.5, 6.8, or 308?

 

5.56, no real need for any of those other calibers. If I need something with some real power, I've got my trusty Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R.

 

If you get the chance, get some ss109 rounds. It's about the only surplus stuff worth owning.

 

I'll only be buying soft point and hollow point ammunition. 99% of ranges in the DFW area have banned all FMJ rifle ammunition, and the other 1% do not allow steel core surplus ammo. Unfortunately I am stuck having to go pay to shoot at a range, wish I had a bunch of land to go shoot at.

every time ive shot an AK they feel sloppy compared to my M4gery

 

My AK definitely doesn't feel sloppy, maybe not as refined as the AR, but definitely not sloppy. It shoots very smooth and easy as well.
