Default Having trouble deciding on a new DD, or?

Basically, my job has me driving quite a bit. I am getting a hair over 16 MPG with my 2001 RCSB. I have some money put away, have set a $5000 limit despite having double that. I absolutely do not want a car payment.

In the back of my mind, I feel like I can buy a lot of gas for $5K. I have looked into several different vehicles, but seem to talk myself out of them every time I think I have settled on what I want.

Right now I have been looking at 2000-up Ford Rangers and Mazda B2200s. 4cyl, 5 speed. They get over 10 MPG more than my Silverado. And I know that I will be more comfortable than in a tiny car.

All opinions and constructive criticism welcome.

I like those, owned a few brand new in the past. They just don't get the same mileage as the ranger/b-series. I would really like a 4.3L 5 speed truck. I have found a few locally, just haven't made time to go look at them. I don't remember the 2.2Ls being very reliable. I drive 500-600 miles a week currently.

Unless you just want to keep miles off your truck, you will never come out ahead keeping your truck and buying another for commuting.

Lets say you double your fuel mileage to 32mpg with the new truck. So if you drive 600 miles a week and pay $3.00 gal for gas, your current truck will cost you $32 a week just in fuel. Your new truck will be half that, so $16. So you will save $16 a week in gas.

You spend $5000 on the new truck. You have to drive it for 6 years and 187,200 miles just to break even on GAS! lol You still have to pay insurance and tires and oil changes on top of keeping your old truck. Just something to think about... unless you really just want another truck.

You're exactly right. Most people don't realize how long it will take their commuter car to start paying them back in gas savings.

Also, Why isn't your work paying for the gas if they are making you drive all those extra miles? Are you self employed?

Keeping miles off my truck and not completely wearing it out is part of it. I get $0.55 a mile, but only between stops... my commute to my first stop, and the ride home is on me. I get paid for about 140-160 of the miles I drive per week. I write off my fuel, and maintenance costs.

I have been looking at Ford Fusions lately, I am all over the place with what I should get.

I bought a 2012 Chevy Cruze for a gas mile car, lol so I really can't talk about it actual saving money buying a car for millage as a way to "save" money. But it has saved 50K miles off my turbo truck the last 3-4 years and it gets 34-36mpg even with a hot tune from Trifecta on it. Fun little turbo 4 banger! lol

My cousin bought a Ford Focus for a commuter like what you do driving a sales route and drives it a lot. I've been in it and I'll take my Cruze over it ANY day. Quieter and way more power.

I borrowed a friend's Cruze LTZ for a week, not a bad car. I averaged 33 MPG. But, I felt a bit claustrophobic - despite not being a tall/big guy.

I keep looking at trucks, because I feel like I can put miles on one and not lose a ton of money when I go to resell it. Down here in the plywood state, a lot of people use trucks to make a living. I have never had a problem selling a truck down here. RCSB V8 trucks with high miles are still pulling good money because of the demand.

Funny.... an employee of mine and I split costs on a car to quit driving our trucks down the highway every day to and from the work site. Combined we easily spend $2000 a month on gas in those trucks running them. Now we spend less than half that on those trucks plus keep the wear and tear off. We bought a 2004 Malibu Maxx for like $3500 in really nice shape. It gets over 30 mpg on the highway and costs the same amount to fuel up in 3 to 4 days of driving as my truck burns in one day alone. In less than 6 months we wil easily surpass the price of the car in fuel savings...... so yeah it can pay pretty easily. I can buy a new beater for that money once a year and still come out ahead.... Both trucks make $25 an hour each including the commute.... take a little of that and you can have a balling beater lol.

I get sick of trucks and they really annoy me... that Malibu is huge inside for how small it appears...... I am 6' 2" and can stretch out easily in the rear seat.. plus all the seats fold and you can open the whole car up and haul whatever. Hell I bought my Impala soley because I enjoyed the Malibu... and it gives me an excuse to sell my 2015 Silverado turd...... so its a win win.

A 4.3 S10 though..... yeah.... expect about the same MPG as your current truck lol.
