Default gearing

I'm kinda with a friend over gears

He says car with huge radials and short gears will kill another with longer gears on the quarter EVERYTIME regardless of other things such as wheel/tire size, size of the stall etc

I think he's looking into a mustang tunnel view and not seeing possibilities with trucks for different ride heights and preferences etc

I agree that cars with identical everything cept gears, shorter will win the 1/4, but he won't believe that wheels/tires or anything else besides "doing digs or high end rolls as your objective" matters at all.

Any input?

The shorter the gear the less rpm you get out of your stall for one thing (less load on the converter), other then that you just want to come acrost the 1-4 mile line at your peak hp in third. The more waight you push the more a lower gear will help and the trucks push more wind on the top end so they tend to bog in third so the sooner you get it into third the better the top end will be. So yeah you wont get to short of a gear in there vary ease but its possiable. look at these new 6l80s there 4th gear aint even as tall as a 60es third gear is and they seem to be doing vary well.

Dude, you're right and your friend seems to be ignorant. Tire size can have a huge impact as well as the stall. However, that being said if you've already said this to him then there is no point in repeating it to him again. Just let him believe what he wants to.
